NEW DELHI: Anirban Lahiri made a strong claim for a place in the Indian team for the Eisenhower Cup World amateur golf championship to be held in South Africa in October. Posting his third under-par card in the final round of the eight-round selection trials, Lahiri tallied an impressive score of one-over 577. Lahiri posted a card of five-under 67 with seven birdies and two bogeys to be five strokes better than Gaganjeet Bhullar and Ajeetesh Sandhu. Bhullar, who led the field after the seventh round, shot 77 as a double bogey and four bogies spoiled his day. The Indian Golf Union (IGU) will send a three-player team with a non-playing captain being the fourth member. After four rounds at the Golden Greens Golf Resort in Gurgaon, the remaining rounds were played at the Greg Norman Signature Jaypee Greens Golf Resort in Greater Noida. The IGU will, however, rate the performance for selection based on the best seven rounds. Lahiri made it to the top with a score of 500, while Sandhu (504) took the second position and Bhullar (505) third. Joseph Chakola, who shot an aggregate of 587, will have 509 as his `best of seven' score. Chakola was tied fifth, but should make it to the Indian team by virtue of his top rank on the IGU merit list.
