KOZHIKODE: Except in Kunnamangalam where United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate U. C. Raman won, the victory margins of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) candidates have increased in all other Assembly constituencies in Kozhikode district. The LDF candidates won the Kozhikode-I, Vadakara, Nadapuram, Meppayur, Koilandy, Perambra and Balussery seats by a margin of over 10,000 votes. Janatadal (Secular) candidate M. K. Premnath secured the highest lead of over 21,000 votes against his nearest opponent Ponnarathu Balakrishnan from the Vadakara constituency. The victory margin of LDF candidate C. K. Nanu from this constituency was 14,159 in 2001 elections. The victory margin of LDF candidates was less than 10,000 only in the constituencies where its candidates captured from the United Democratic Front (UDF). But in Kozhikode-II constituency, INL candidate P. M. A. Salam polled more than 14,000 than his nearest rival T. P. M. Zahir. In the previous elections, only the IUML candidates C. Mamootty and C. Moyinkutty secured a margin of over 10,000 votes against their nearest rivals in the Assembly constituencies in the district. Mr. Mamootty had a margin of over 16,000 votes against his nearest rival C. Mohasin of Janatadal (S) and Mr. Moyinkutty had over 15,000 votes against NCP candidate Cyriac John. This time both the seats have gone in favour of the LDF and with a margin of over 7,000 and 5,000 votes respectively. Interestingly the victory margins of the LDF candidates were also higher in these elections than what that of the LDF candidates had secured in the 1996 elections. Then the LDF candidates polled 15,000 votes more than their rivals in Vadakara, Nadapuram, Meypayyur and Balussery constituencies.
