Kozhikode: National Security Advisor M.K. Narayanan will dedicate to the nation a Kunhali Marakkar Memorial Stupa, constructed by the Navy, at Iringal village in the district on May 17. According to a press release from the Press Information Bureau (Defence Wing) here on Friday, Vice-Admiral S.C.S. Bangara, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Naval Command, will be present on the occasion. Consequent to the visit of Admiral Arun Prakash, Chief of Naval Staff, to the Kunhali Marakkar Museum earlier, it was decided to erect a memorial on its site to Kunhali Marakkar.
Preserve a house
While the State Government had taken steps to preserve a small house associated with the Kunhali lineage at Iringal, between Payyoli and Vadakara, and later, converted that into a museum housing artefacts of the Kunhali era, the Navy galvanised its resources and had constructed the stupa. This was part of efforts of the Navy to enthuse the citizens to pay greater heed to our rich maritime legacy, the release said.
