India wins bronze

Sports Reporter

NEW DELHI: Featherweight pugilist Balwinder Beniwal won the lone medal, a bronze, for India at the 4th International cadet boxing tournament in Azerbaijan.

Beniwal was part of the five-member second-string cadet boxing team, which returned here after a poor show at the May 6-10 event. Beniwal won his first round bout against Ukraine's Denis Benkovich 20-7, but lost in the semi-finals to Cedric Williams of the U.S. 14-24.

Other Indian pugilists, Bhoopender (48kg), M. Venkatesh (54kg), Amit Karki (60kg) and Manjeet Singh (70kg) all lost their first round bouts to bow out. Bhoopender lost to Sadi Aliyev of Azerbaijan in a referee stopped contest; Shener Yakup of Turkey out-pointed Venkatesh 32-15; Karki lost to Kazakhstan's Nurbol Dauletov 23-31; and Manjeet Singh lost a close fight against Dato Gagochuri of Georgia 14-17.

Azerbaijan won the overall championship with four gold, two silver and three bronze medals. United States (2-2-1) and Russia (2-1-3) finished at second and third positions respectively.
