Writ of social organisations failed to influence voters

Staff Reporter

Candidates supported by community organisations faced defeat

ALAPPUZHA: The voters in the district seem to have given little attention to the diktats of social organisations while electing MLAs in the Assembly elections 2006, going by the results that were announced on Thursday.

SNDP Yogam

While SNDP Yogam general secretary Vellappally Natesan had announced his resolve to defeat Tourism Minister K.C. Venugopal and KSU State president P.C. Vishnunath in Alappuzha and Chengannur respectively, both of them scored emphatic victories.

The UDF candidate at Ambalappuzha, D. Sugathan of the DIC(K), and the UDF candidate at Cherthala, C.K. Shajimohan of the Congress, who enjoyed active support of Mr. Natesan had to face humiliating defeat in their constituencies.

The Akhila Kerala Dheevara Sabha, which has good influence in Ambalappuzha constituency, had declared its support to the UDF. But its support could not ensure the victory of Mr. Sugathan. Here, G. Sudhakaran of the LDF won by over 11,000 votes.

Fishermen community

The Swatantra Matsya Tozhilali Federation, which represents a section of the Latin Catholic fishermen community, had declared its support to the UDF. But in the constituencies of Aroor, Cherthala and Ambalappuzha, where it claims to have the strength to influence the result, the LDF candidates won comfortable victories.

Nair Service Society

Though, the NSS publicly announced an equidistant policy regarding support to both fronts, it covertly supported candidates of its choice in some constituencies.

In Kuttanad, its support to the LDF candidate, K.C. Joseph, could not ensure his victory.

In some other constituencies, the candidates who enjoyed its support have won but it could not be said that its support was the sole factor that decided the outcome.
