Coimbatore will have no representation in Cabinet

M. Gunasekaran

DMK has lost six precious seats in this district

TIRUPUR: Coimbatore district, industrial capital of Tamil Nadu, will have no representation in the State Cabinet for the second time in the past few decades.

The Coimbatore district, with 14 Assembly segments, equal to Chennai, has once again proved to be a bastion of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam by winning 10 out of 14 seats. DMK could win Coimbatore east (Pongalur N. Palanisamy) and Pongalur (A.S. Mani) seats and lost six seats.

The former Minister for Forest and Environment, Mr. Palanisamy, also the Coimbatore district secretary of the DMK, was expected to become a minister again. Surprisingly he was not given a chance.

According to sources the DMK high command was unhappy with him over the poor performance of the party district unit here in the just-concluded elections. The DMK had lost six precious seats in this district considered because of wrong choice of candidates and lack of organisational skills of its local leaders.

In this western region, the neighbouring Erode district will have two ministers and one each from Salem and the Nilgiris.

During Ms. Jayalalithaa's chief ministership during 1991-96 the district had no representation in the Cabinet.
