Protest against reservation in higher education

EXPRESSING SOLIDARITY: Students of medical and dental colleges staging a protest in Mangalore on Friday.

MANGALORE: Students of medical and dental colleges in Dakshina Kannada took out a procession from the Light House Hill to the office of the Deputy Commissioner here on Friday in protest against the move to reserve seats for candidates from Other Backward Classes in admission to higher education.

Over 700 students from five medical colleges and three dental colleges participated in the procession. They submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner addressed to the President.

A copy of 2,000 signatures of students collected to oppose the move was also submitted. The memorandum said the recommendation to reserve 27 per cent of seats for students from Other Backward Classes in admission to higher education was regrettable.

``We feel that the implementation of this proposal will not only undermine the value of merit but also compromise with the principles of freedom and equality that a free democratic nation such as India should be based on,'' it said.

The memorandum said the students in Dakshina Kannada would extend their support to those in Delhi who have raised their voice against the move. It said that the Union Government was not in a mood to heed to the voices of the "forthcoming generation.''

"We request you to please intervene in the matter and save the image of a free and democratic India in the eyes of forthcoming generations.'' Copies of the memorandum were also sent to the Prime Minister, Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Chief Minister, Minister for Medical Education and Minister for Higher Education.
