Trouble again on Satyabhama campus

Staff Reporter

Police say some first year students started the blaze

  • The `reason' is to postpone the model examinations scheduled to start on Saturday
  • Students dispersed after police assured them that they would speak to the management
  • University authorities refused to come out in public about the incidents.

CHENNAI: Yet another bout of violence broke out on the Satyabhama Deemed University campus near Sholinganallur, with students setting fire to college property around 9 p.m. on Friday.

According to police, the fire was started by a group of first year engineering students in a bid to postpone the model examinations scheduled to start on Saturday.

A senior police officer said "the students said they needed time to study for the examinations as the college was shut down for the past one month. Some of the students set fire to two or three beds on the college ground to postpone the model examinations. It was soon put out by the college's water tanker."

Later, the fire and rescue department's tender and the city police arrived at the scene.

The officer said the students dispersed after the police said they would speak to the management about giving more time to prepare for the examinations.

For the past two months students have been on a collision course with the management over their demand to the latter about getting AICTE approval for the degree courses. At least on two occasions, there have been instances of arson.

But the university authorities have refused to come out in public about the incidents.

Students said the trouble began after the first year students wanted the model examinations postponed. Apparently, this was turned down. The students, who initially broke away after the argument, said they did not know the persons behind the arson.

But they were told by their teachers that the examinations would take place on Saturday.
