VIJAYAWADA: Construction of the second block of Government General Hospital (GGH) on the Siddhartha Medical College campus will be completed by August 15. Principal of the medical college G. Eswar, giving details about the development of the teaching hospital, said here on Tuesday that different buildings envisaged as part of the hospital development plan were in various stages of construction. The second block of the GGH on the college campus would be ready for occupation by Independence Day. Instructions were given by the Hospital Development Society (HDS) chairman and Collector Navin Mittal to see that the second block was ready for occupation on schedule. Dr. Eswar said Rs. 16 crores had been sanctioned for the development of infrastructure like lecture halls, diagnostic block, modern mortuary, junior doctors' quarters (separate blocks for men and women) and extension of the Mother & Child Ward. Work on these buildings was in various stages of execution. The HDS has raised funds for purchasing expensive equipment like CT Scan and treadmill for the teaching hospital.
Staff shortage
Admitting that there was shortage of staff, he said, the State Government was trying to overcome several hurdles for the recruitment of adequate faculty for the college. Though the Government was making every effort to fill vacancies, the number of staff available in the college was short of the Medical Council of India norms. The situation was same in all Government colleges in the wake of an exodus of faculty to private colleges, which were paying higher salaries, he said. Dr. Eswar said that the medical college would be the hub of academic and general activity in the silver jubilee year. A cultural festival would be organised for students of all Government medical and dental colleges. The college would also conduct continuing medical education (CME) programmes for its old students. The sports meeting and a medical and health exhibition conducted as part of the celebrations were a grand success, he said.
