Case against corporator, brother

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: The burns sustained by Lalaguda Congress corporator Varaprasad's wife J.S. Rani four days ago were not accidental, police said on Friday. "In a fresh statement, Rani charged that Varaprasad and his younger brother Chinna had been harassing her for dowry. Hence, we altered the accidental burns case to that of dowry harassment," Gopalapuram ACP Mohd. Tajuddin told The Hindu .

According to the ACP, Rani alleged that her family gave Rs. 4 lakhs towards dowry to the corporator at the time of marriage but he had been demanding an additional Rs. 6 lakhs soon after the marriage. "She told us that Chinna used to threaten her not to reveal about the harassment to anyone," the ACP explained.
