Rehman Khan re-elected
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI:
Congress leader K. Rehman Khan was unanimously re-elected Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha on Friday. Floor leaders of several parties led by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh proposed his name and the others, including the Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Jaswant Singh, seconded the proposals.
This is Mr. Khan's second term after being re-elected last month from Karnataka for a second time.
Mr. Singh appreciated Mr. Khan's approach and said it was because of this attitude by Chairman Bhairon Singh Shekhawat and him that the ``bulldozer-type approach'' was absent in the Rajya Sabha.
The Prime Minister noted the goodwill and admiration earned by Mr. Rehman Khan for the fair manner in which he conducted the proceedings of the House for the past two years. Mr. Khan was noted for promoting education, especially for the minorities, scholarship and learning.
Sitaram Yechury (CPI-M) said his party reposed a great deal of faith in Mr. Rehman as he was devoid of prejudice.
