BANGALORE: Rain has played spoilsport nearly all week, and it was no different on Friday, at the Fort High School grounds, venue of the 68th Ramanavami concert festival of the Sri Rama Seva Mandali . Legendary violin maestro Lalgudi G. Jayaraman, who is credited with having first played Carnatic classical music on this instrument, was to have been presented with the S.V. Narayanaswamy Rao Memorial Award by Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy.
Sudden downpour
The Chief Minister's penchant of coming pretty late to most public functions being well known, the motley crowd of a hundred-odd people, who had decided to risk the chance of a downpour and arrived early, didn't begin to wonder about his arrival until it began to pour rather suddenly. Heavy winds, and rain suddenly turned the huge pandal, where Bangalore Kodandaram and party were keeping people engaged with a clarinet recital, into "puddle land" the plastic chairs flew, and rain began to seep through the pandal causing the audience, mostly senior citizens who had decided to round off their evening walk with some music and a look at the Chief Minister, run for cover. So did a few women who had come in their best silks, flowers and glittering jewellery. The person of the evening, Mr. Jayaraman, waited patiently in a makeshift room. After two cloudbursts that sent profuse rains, and a confirmation that the Chief Minister was not coming, the organisers announced that the programme had been postponed to Sunday at 10.30 a.m.
