MCD to continue sealing, demolition drives

NEW DELHI: Despite the Lok Sabha passing the Bill for one-year moratorium on the ongoing sealing and demolitions drives on Friday, the Supreme Court-appointed monitoring committee continued with its work on sealing of illegal shops operating from residential areas and asked the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to prepare a foolproof strategy to target illegal shops operating from those 60-foot-wide roads that does not come under the mixed land-use policy.

After directions from the Supreme Court on Thursday, the three-member committee has asked the civic body to properly survey all 60-foot-wide roads so that there was no scope of confusion among traders and residents. Before starting the sealing action on these roads, MCD officials have been asked to inform people about the roads where action would be initiated through public notice and by putting the list on their official website. Unlike last time when defaulting traders were given two chances to file their affidavits before the Committee, the members wants that this time round only one chance should be given to traders after which the sealing action would begin. The Supreme Court has given the go-ahead to the Committee's proposal to target illegal shops in roads that are 60-foot-wide and not covered under the mixed land-use policy. More than 300 roads are likely to come under the new direction.

Meanwhile, the MCD is also in no mood to stop the ongoing sealing and demolition drives in the Capital and will continue targeting illegal shops and structures as ordered by the Supreme Court. "The twin drives will continue until the Bill is notified by the Government," said a senior MCD official.
