Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Consumer Cause (CCC) has requested the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) to consider declaring the third or fourth Saturday as their monthly holiday instead of second Saturday.
Memorandum
In a memorandum to the State Government and the Chairman of TNEB, the Secretary of CCC, K. Kathirmathiyon, had pointed out that consumers normally turned up for paying their current consumption (CC) charges after the tenth of every month after the salaries get credited. Invariably, the consumers turn up only between the 13th and 15th of every month. Invariably, the second Saturday in a month gets sandwiched between the last few days for the remittance of power consumption charges. With the TNEB having the second Saturday as monthly holiday, the consumers are left in the lurch because of the two consecutive holidays - Saturday and Sunday. Invariably, the cash collection counters of TNEB witness serpentine queues on the succeeding Monday causing hardship to not only the consumers but also the TNEB staff.
Eight occasions
During the current calendar year alone, the second Saturday fell between 10th and 14th of the month on eight occasions. Taking into account, the practical difficulties expressed, the CCC suggested that the TNEB think of shifting its second Saturday holiday to either the third or fourth Saturday. The plea is not to dispense with a holiday but to shift it to the subsequent Saturdays for the benefit of both the consumers and Board.
Schedule of Government
The Chief Financial Controller for TNEB, in response to the memorandum had pointed out that the TNEB was following the set holiday schedule of the State Government and the same had been in practice for quite some time. The TNEB also intimated that the Board was actively contemplating on introducing holiday collection centres for the customers to remit their charges even on holidays, through designated branches of banks and electronic clearing system to tide over such constraints.
