Staff Reporter
ERODE: The Kalingarayan canal, the lifeline of 5,000-odd families of farmers, has been affected due to dumping of garbage. The Kalingarayan farmers have complained to the Government that the tanneries and textile dyeing industries are discharging untreated effluents into the Kalingarayan canal and thereby, affecting the yield.
Municipal sewage
Thousands of farmers were afflicted with skin disease due to the use of contaminated water flowing in the canal. Now, the water supply has been stopped and a meagre quantity of water is flowing in the canal. In Erode, the canal is on the eastern side and the municipal sewage mixes with the canal water. Huge quantities of garbage collected from houses deposited on the sides of the canal are a common sight. The heavy wind has added to the problem with garbage strewn all over the canal. The farmers have demanded that such dumping of garbage and debris on the banks of the canal should be banned.
