An emotional saga of love

VILLAGE ROMANCE : Shivamani and Maanya

Belli Betta (Kannada)

Director: Shivaraj Hosakere

Cast: Sunil, Shivamani, M.P. Shankar, Harish Rai, Maanya and Jayanthi

Reminiscent of tragic love stories that launched the late Kalpana into stardom, Belli Betta promises an emotional drama with the eternal theme of love and social evils.

Straight and unpretentious narrative style, insightful dialogues and true-to-life situations raises above the average despite its many grey patches.

Promising director

It also successfully launches Shivaraj Hosakere as a promising director.

The film disregards obscenity and violence although the theme demands such elements.

The realistic story line, equally realistic and restrained delineation and characterisation add to the quality of the film.

Village girl

The film is all about a village girl Eshwari (Maanya), her falling in love with postman Krishna (Shivamani), her forced marriage to a rich man's irresponsible son, Prasanna (Harish Rai), her falling victim to circumstances and becoming a prostitute, and college boy Shiva (Sunil) asking for her hand in marriage despite knowing everything about her.

While Sunil has no scope to express himself convincingly, Shivamani draws our attention. Maanya makes an emphatic presence.
