Campaign for Tirupati fest kicked off amid fervour

Staff Reporter

Colourful procession taken out in town

TIRUPATI : The process of setting the stage and drawing public attention for the `Tirupati Utsavalu' began here on Saturday with a colourful procession taken in the arterial roads of the town. The event was aimed at sending the message across to the residents that it was for all of them to voluntarily take part in the three-day festival that begins on May 28.

The Annamayya statue in the town was garlanded by TTD Executive officer APVN Sarma, to symbolically announce that the stage has been set for the fest. As the day also marked the 598th birthday of the saint-poet, a descendant of Tallapaka lineage Harinarayana lit a huge camphor candle in front of his statue.

Banner released

A special banner was released with the message `Light the candle of spirituality in every heart to remove the darkness of ignorance.' The procession, led by TUDA chairman B.Karunakar Reddy and attended by MLA M. Venkataramana, Collector S.S. Rawat, Superintendent of Police V.V. Gopalakrishna, SVU Vice-Chancellor S. Jayarama Reddy and the elite of the town, culminated at the Srikrishna Devaraya statue.

Mr. Sarma recalled how devotees across the globe had an attachment to Tirumala/Tirupati and how the temple enjoyed a place of reverence in their hearts.

He appealed to the denizens to behave properly with the pilgrims so that they relished the comfortable and blissful experience for long. Mr. Karunakar Reddy said that the fest was aimed at throwing light on the various facets of Tirumala temple, which belonged to the pre-historic period. Annamacharya Project Director Medasani Mohan, Deputy EO (Tirumala) R. Prabhakar Reddy, Parapathyadar N. Seshadri and DPP secretary P. Chenchu Subbiah were present.
