Belgaum: Curtains on the week-long Gadinadu Utasav-2006 came down on Saturday with Karnataka Sahitya Parishat President Chandrashekhar Patil giving a call for introspection as to why the Kannada movement suffered in Belgaum. Delivering the valedictory address, he said Belgaum was once a centre for a vibrant and strong Kannada movement in the State. Why and how it lost its sheen is a matter to be introspected by all concerned, he said. Mr. Patil sought to remind all those "vested interests" exploiting the boundary dispute to suit their own conveniences that Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, during his last visit to Bangalore, had made it clear that the boundary dispute had benefited none. "When the Maharashtra Chief Minister himself has realised that the boundary dispute had not benefited anybody, why such wisdom should not prevail upon those who are trying to keep the dispute alive," the Kannada Shitya Parishat president asked. He said there was no dispute as far as Karnataka was concerned. The Karnataka Government and its people were bound by the Mahajan Commission Report, which was yet to be implemented. Complimenting the organisers of the utsav, he said such festivals were essentially a platform were different streams of culture integrated and reflected in unison. Earlier, Shashikant Nayak and Jagdish Metgud, MLAs, spoke. Kannada and Culture Director Sreenivas highlighted the objectives behind organising the utsav. Former minister Prakash B. Hukkeri presided and Shri Tontadarya Swamiji of Gadag attended the function. Deputy Commissioner and chairperson of the Gadinadu Utsav Organising Committee Shalini Rajneesh was present. The valedictory was followed by cultural programmes.
