HASSAN: President of the Hassan Zilla Panchayat (ZP) H. Annappa Shetty has said that the panchayat has decided to urge the Government to release more funds to take up development works in rural areas. Presiding over a meeting convened to elect presidents and members of various standing committees of the panchayat here on Friday, he said that the newly elected members of the panchayat had toured their constituencies and prepared a list of problems being faced by the people. To address them, the panchayat needed funds in addition to the regular grants from the Government. In view of this, a memorandum would be submitted to Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy during his visit to the district on Monday, he added. Despite completing 585 drinking water schemes last year by spending Rs. 12.27 crores, it was not possible for the zilla panchayat to address the drinking water problem in many parts of the district. A sum of Rs. 10.89 crore more was needed to supply water to the affected areas, executive engineer F.R. Jamadar said. He said Rs. 8 crore more was needed to complete the work on roads. As many as 688 continuing education centres, 689 anganavadi centres and 3,281 stree shakti self-help groups had no buildings and Rs. 69.95 crore was needed for the purpose, he added. Former Minister for Public Works and Energy H.D. Revanna said the panchayat should take up work on rejuvenation of tanks and send a proposal to the Government in this regard. He urged the authorities concerned to distribute saplings to farmers in view of the district receiving good monsoon showers.
