SYMPHONY: A scene from the Bach-Mozart-Beethoven Music Festival 2006 in the city.
KOZHIKODE: Western classical music enthusiasts have an opportunity to hear as well as perform at the two-day Bach-Mozart-Beethoven Music Festival-2006, which began here on Saturday. Harmony Calicut, a cultural and musical organisation that has organised the event, felt the need for arranging a platform for students to showcase their talents. "We thought it was necessary to evolve a culture of enjoying western classical music performances. Students of western music are allowed to play the violin, guitar and keyboard. A total of 40 students from as far as Thrissur to Kannur reached here to perform on the first day," says K.C. Sukumaran, convener, Harmony, and K. Devadas, secretary. The students rendered the compositions of renowned classical musicians such as Bach, Mozart and Beethoven, besides renditions from popular compositions of other musicians. Professionals, including music teachers in Kozhikode, showcased their talents in the evening. "This is not a competition, but an opportunity for students to showcase their talents," says Devadas. Prasad Kurien, music consultant to Harmony, says that students are now attracted to western classical music. "This trend has been on for the last five years," Mr. Kurien said. George S. Paul, art critic, gave a talk on `Comparing Western classical and Eastern classical music' on the first day.
