No representation in Cabinet for four central districts

Syed Muthahar Saqaf

DMK-led alliance bagged 31 of 43 seats in the region

  • DMK alone has emerged victorious in 20 segments
  • While Tiruchi and Thanjavur get two representations each, Tiruvarur gets one
  • Karur, which returned the DMK alliance from three of the four seats, has no representation
  • Perambalur, which accounts for five seats, returned two DMK nominees and a Congressman

TIRUCHI: Despite the central region giving the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-led alliance a resounding victory, four of the seven revenue districts — Nagapattinam, Karur, Pudukottai and Perambalur — have not been represented in the Cabinet.

The alliance bagged 31 of the 43 seats and the DMK alone emerged victorious in 20 segments.

Five MLAs have been included in the Ministry.

While Tiruchi and Thanjavur districts got two representations each, a representative from Tiruvarur, which came into being a decade ago, has been included in the Cabinet for the first time.

    Party veterans

Party veterans Ko. Si. Mani (Kumbakonam), S. N. M. Ubayadullah (Thanjavur), both from Thanjavur, K. N. Nehru (Tiruchi-II) and N. Selvaraj (Musiri), both from Tiruchi, and U. Mathivanan, Tiruvarur (reserved), are the new Ministers from this region.

The DMK won in six and four seats in Tiruchi and Thanjavur districts. Though the alliance scored a cent per cent win in Tiruvarur district, the DMK had to be content with a solitary seat, as the three others went to the CPI.

    Thumping win

The alliance posted a thumping win in Nagapattinam district, bagging all the six seats (DMK three and PMK, Congress and CPI-M one each).

It was carved out of the composite Thanjavur district in 1991, but it got representation in the Cabinet only in the last AIADMK regime, when R. Jeevanandham was made a Minister. However he was dropped later.

Karur was not given representation, though the district returned the DMK alliance from three of the four seats (DMK-2 and UML-1).

Pudukottai played an important role in the state politics, and stalwarts including Ramaiah (Congress), K. V. Subbiah and K. Chandrasekaran (both DMK), S. Thirunavukkarasar and S. Ragupathi (both AIADMK) had served as Ministers in the different governments.

In the last Jayalalithaa Ministry, M. Radhakrishnan, elected from Tirumayam, represented the district.

This time, the DMK and its allies, the CPI and the Congress, won one seat each, while the AIADMK bagged the other two.

Perambalur, which accounts for five seats, returned two DMK nominees and a Congressman, while two went to the AIADMK.
