Udhagamandalam: A change from the usual venue which entailed a steep climb up the Stone House hill here notwithstanding, the 70th and 71st All Breeds Championship Dog Shows of the Madras Canine Club were witnessed by a large number of tourists and locals. The Honorary Secretary of the Club C.V. Sudarshan told The Hindu that the shows had attracted as many as 340 entries. In the 70th show a German Shepherd Dog Ch. Sambesy von der Wilhelmswarte owned by K. Harish Kapil bagged `the best in show' prize. The `second best in show' was an Irish Setter dog Sebring's Wings of Fire owned by K.C. Mistry. A Whippet bitch Seecrofts Sonata owned by C.V. Sudarshan walked away with the prize for the `third best in show'. While a Spaniel (Cocker) dog Tarrendayle Itsabout Me owned by K.B. Rajanikanth was adjudged the `fourth best in show' the prize for the `best puppy in show' went to a Retriever (Labrador) dog Alex of Dogmatix owned by Sanjay Desai. In the 71st show a Siberian Husky dog Aust. Am. Ch. Suthanlites Law Breaker dog owned by Kalpana Setty was adjudged `the best in show'.While an Irish Setter dog Fleetwood's Symphony in Red owned by N. Reguraj was given the prize for the `second best', `the third best' was a Saluki dog Aust. Ch. Taejaan Wicked Games owned by Kalpana Setty. The prize for the `fourth best' went to a German Shepherd bitch Marry Vom Turkenkopf owned by Jaskirat Singh. The `best puppy in show' was Dachshund (Std) smooth dog Paigah's Beaver owned by Master B. Arjun. While the judge for the 70th show was N. Radhakrishnan of Mumbai, Rajiv Shandilya of Delhi was the judge for the 71st show.

Southern Railway (Chennai) pulled off a thrilling 25-21, 17-25, 22-25, 25-17, 16-14 win over a fighting Indian Bank (Chennai) in a third round league match of the 38th Ramaswamy memorial State-level invitational volleyball tournament for the Texmo Cup Coimbatore on Friday night.
In the eighth district-level open volleyball tournament, Mohan Memorial Volleyball Club lifted the Aquatex Cup after beating Thadagam Volleyball Cub 27-25, 25-23, 18-25, 25-21 in the final. The results: State-level (round robin league): Southern Railway bt ICF 25-21, 17-25, 22-25, 25-17, 16-14; Indian Bank bt Income Tax RC 25-20, 25-19, 25-23; Sports Hostel of Excellence bt Sunder MVC 25-14, 25-21, 25-21.
