Best Educationist Award given away

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Centre for Education and Empowerment of the Downtrodden (CEED)'s Lifetime Achievement Award and Best Educationist Award were given away to K.P. Johny, Principal, Alpha Arts and Science College, Chennai, and S. Ignacimuthu, former Vice-Chancellor of the Madras University respectively, at a function held on Friday. Conferring the awards, Lawrence Pius, Auxiliary Bishop, Madras-Mylapore Diocese, said the work of NGOs such as CEED was important, as standard education still remained a pipe dream for many.

The key to empowerment of the downtrodden was through education and in the globalised economy knowledge was the determinant of success, N. Vittal, former Central Vigilance Commissioner, said. The two awardees were role models for others and the idea of giving equal opportunities to socially oppressed classes was the basic principle of social justice.
