West Zone retains title

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: West Zone retained the title in the J.K. Bose trophy inter-Zone cricket tournament for sports journalists here on Saturday.

West Zone defeated North Zone by 19 runs to record its third consecutive win in the four-team league. North Zone came second with two wins from three matches. East Zone, which crushed South Zone by eight wickets, took the third spot, while South Zone finished last.

SJAM `A' (Akshay Sawai, Bikash Mohapatra and Amol Karhadkar) won the ESPN-Star Sports World Cup quiz. KSJA (Stan Rayan, Roy Joseph and M.R. Praveen Chandran) finished second, while ASJA (S.K. Barua, T.A. Talukdar and Kishore Talukdar) was third.

The scores: West Zone 148 in 24.3 overs (Devandra Pandey 41, Rakesh Tapliyal five for 22, Sujesh Rajan two for 37) bt North Zone 129 in 24.5 overs (Dharmendra Pandey 40, Vijaykumar 30, Naresh Shalke two for eight, Rahul Dixit two for 24, Devandra Pandey two for 25, Anand Vasu two for 40).

South Zone 108 in 21 overs (S.M. Barua four for 30, Debabrata Chakraborthy two for 23) lost to East Zone 109 for two in 15.4 overs (Debabrata Chakraborthy 50 not out, Tauhid Talukdar not out 43). — Principal Correspondent
