NEW DELHI: Singer-cum-actor Lucky Ali led a group of children of displaced farmers from Maharashtra and Rajasthan in staging a peaceful protest at Jantar Mantar here on Saturday to mark World Fair Trade Day.

Under the Oxfam International's Make Trade Fair Campaign banner, a number of children from Madanpur Khadar, a re-settlement colony at the outskirts of the city, also joined the protesters. Hot air balloons were also released on the occasion.

Mr. Ali, who is also Oxfam International's Make Trade Fair Campaign envoy, had met President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on Friday to submit a petition for safeguarding the interests of the poor and marginalised farmers at the WTO.

"Rich countries especially the United States and European Union are forcing developing countries like India to open up their markets but are protecting their own market. This is what our Make Trade Fair Campaign is trying to change. Global trade rules should not be based on double standards. India should not be forced to trade away the interests of poor farmers at the forthcoming WTO General Council meet," said Oxfam's Acting Trade Policy Advisor Palash Kanti Das.
