`All eligible poor, including upper castes, would be provided housing'

  • 80,000 dwellings to be built in Visakhapatnam
  • 35 p.c. of rural people do not have houses

VISAKHAPATNAM: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy reiterated his Government's resolve to provide housing to all eligible poor families in three years.

"We have provided pucca houses to 12 lakh families in two years and it was estimated that another 55 lakhs plus families need housing. This Government is determined to provide housing to all irrespective of the cost," Dr. Reddy said at Pinagadi village in Pendurthy mandal, about 35 km from here on Saturday.

He was speaking at the Grama Sabha organised to inaugurate the Integrated Novel Development In Rural Areas and Model Municipal Areas (Indiramma) programme at the village.

Housing was an important aspect in Indiramma since 35 per cent of rural people did not have houses.

Eighteen lakh houses would be constructed this year, 80,000 of them in Visakhapatnam district.

The housing programme would cover all the eligible poor, even from the upper castes, the Chief Minister said.

The Chief Minister handed over cheques to some beneficiaries under pension schemes, subsidised interest rate to DWCRA groups, etc.

Responding to pleas of sarpanch B. Bhagavan Jayaram and MPP P. Saraswathi, the Chief Minister assured that the Rs.15 lakh Seshugedda water scheme and laying of cement roads and drains would be taken up in the village.

    Water from Polavaram

Water would be supplied to the Bhoodevi irrigation tank through the Polavaram project to ensure permanent supply to agricultural fields in Pendurthy and Sabbavaram mandals.
