NEW DELHI: Health services in hospitals attached to medical colleges in the Capital were affected on Saturday with patients bearing the brunt of the anti-reservation strike as resident doctors and medical students struck work for the second day running. While emergency services were exempted, patients had to put up with long delays as doctors at All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Safdarjung, Sucheta Kripalani and Lok Nayak Hospitals joined in to support the agitating medical students. Striking resident doctors and students at AIIMS shouted slogans against Union Human Resources Development Minister Arjun Singh demanding a roll back of the proposal to reserve 27 per cent of the seats for Other Backward Classes in Central universities and institutes of higher learning. Senior doctors on Saturday have extended their support to the agitating medical students and claimed that the decision to join the strike would be taken on Sunday. "We are with the students and are watching the situation. Normally we do not go on strike as it causes inconvenience to patients,'' said general secretary of the AIIMS Faculty Association K. K. Handa. Meanwhile, the Indian Medical Association has called for a "total medical bandh" in the Capital on Monday and a national "bandh" on May 25. Condemning the police action against protesting medical students, Delhi Medical Association president K. K. Kapur said: "It is the duty of the elected representatives to listen to the viewpoints of the people."
