City students develop fuel-efficient engine

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: In an attempt at improving fuel-efficiency levels in automobiles, three Mechanical of students of Velammal Engineering College, Chennai have developed a six-stroke single cylinder diesel engine.

S. Sairam, S. Boopathy and J.L. Rajavenkataraman developed the engine as a college project. "The concept of multi-stroke engine mainly deals with reduction of the fuel consumed by the engine and thereby increasing the mileage per litre of fuel consumed.

In a four stroke engine, the number of rotations per cycle of the crankshaft is two and they are increased to three rotations per cycle in a six stroke engine," the final year students said in a joint release. They were guided in the project by their head of department, K.R. Senthilkumar, and encouraged by Principal, Prof. C Rathinasabapathy and Chairman, M.V. Muthuramalingam.

S. Bhoopathy said that in a four-stroke engine the crank rotates 720 degrees for a single power stroke, but in their six stroke single cylinder diesel engine, the working cycle is completed in 1080 degrees. Placing two additional strokes between the suction stroke and power compression stroke increases the turbulence of air and duration of air inside the combustion chamber compared to four strokes. The valve timings, cam profile and gear ratio are suitably redesigned. These changes help to increase mileage per litre of fuel and to reduce exhaust gas emissions and consumption of lubricating oil.

Bhoopathy says they designed the project in their seventh semester and successfully finished the prototype in April 2006. "We have filed a patent for the development and arrangement of six strokes," he said.
