Winning margin in 17 seats was below 1,000 votes

R. Chinnaswamy defeats A. Soundarajan by a mere 14 votes in Singanallur

CHENNAI: Though the 2006 Assembly elections recorded a higher voter turnout than in 2001, the winning margin of 17 candidates was below 1,000 votes. Among these are two former Ministers, one of whom won by 53 votes.

At Singanallur, R. Chinnaswamy of the Indian National Trade Union Congress, who contested on the AIADMK symbol, defeated A. Soundararajan of the CPI (M) by 14 votes. Mr. Chinnaswamy secured 1,00,283 votes out of the total 2,40,267 votes polled, while Mr. Soundararajan bagged 1,00,269 votes. CPI(M) candidate from Madurai East N. Nanmaran won by 52 votes over his MDMK rival M. Boominathan.

In Anaicut, the former AIADMK Minister, K. Pandurangan, scraped through by 53 votes. Mr. Pandurangan secured 59,220 votes, while Varalakshmi of the Pattali Makkal Katchi, bagged 59,167 votes. S. Mani (DMK) and M. Rajasekharan (Congress) obtained the same margin of votes in Pongalur and Thottiam. At Tiruchengode, P. Thanngamani (AIADMK) obtained 116 votes more than S. Gandhiselvan of the DMK. O.K. Chinnaraj (AIADMK) and T. Velmurugan (PMK) secured 142 and 148 votes more than their rivals in Mettupalayam and Panruti.

K.S. Vijayakumar (AIADMK), who defeated P. Venkatachalapathy (DMK), by getting 27,162 more votes in the May 2005 by-election in Gummidipoondifollowing the murder of his father, K. Sudarsanam, got only 229 more votes than Durai Jayavelu (PMK). A mere 409 votes made the difference in the Harbour constituency, where DMK general secretary K. Anbazhagan won. The former Minister, Nainar Nagendran of the AIADMK, lost to N. Malai Raja (DMK) by 606 votes in Tirunelveli. A margin of 916 votes enabled G. Hari (AIADMK) to win in Tiruttani. K. Periyasamy (PMK) defeated S. Pounraj (AIADMK) by 964 votes in Poompuhar.
