CHENNAI: In a daring daylight offence, thieves broke into the house of a Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) candidate in Ambattur and took away gold jewellery weighing about 130 sovereigns on Friday.

The incident came to light on Friday night, when the inmates returned home.

A. Alagarsamy (65), father of A. Subburaj, the DMDK candidate, who contested from the Virudhunagar Assembly constituency, said all but one member of the family had been camping in Virudhunagar in connection with election work for the past one month.

A visit to the scene of crime revealed that the intruders had gained entry into the house, located on Kalidas Street in the Ramapuram area, by breaking window grills.

They then broke two rooms on the ground floor and another room on the first floor before removing the valuables kept in bureaus.

Mr. Balraj, an investment consultant, said he had locked the house and left for office around 10 a.m.

He, along with other members of the family, returned home in the night and they were able to open the main door only by using force.

The incident could have happened between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., he suspected.

Mr. Alagarsamy said: "When we came in we realised that the intruders bolted the main door from inside.

Hence we were not able to open it. We saw the two rooms on the ground floor and one on the first floor broken open and the materials from the bureau strewn all over. We saw window grills too broken," he said.

Silver articles untouched

The intruders targeted only the gold jewellery and left the silver articles untouched.

Similarly, they did not bother to remove petty cash kept in the house, Mr. Alagarsamy said.

The family had a dog, Mr. Balraj said, adding that it would bark if any strangers attempted to enter the house.

As neighbours said they did not hear the dog bark, Mr. Balraj said, "I suspect that it is the handiwork of someone who knows about the movement of our family members. They waited for an opportunity and realising that there was no one during the day they broke in and took away the valuables."

The Ambattur police have registered a case and are investigating.
