Small-scale units seek comprehensive policy

Staff Reporter

Call for early switch over to VAT

CHENNAI: A comprehensive policy for small-scale industries and a State-level export policy are the measures trade and industry in Tamil Nadu expect from the new Government.

Greeting Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on his assuming office, Tamilnadu Small and Tiny Industries Association president G. Balakrishnan said a comprehensive policy for SSIs must take into account the large-scale employment provided by the units and the sector's contribution to the exchequer.

The SSIs "hope that with his [Mr. Karunanidhi's] rich experience and able guidance, Tamil Nadu will reach a new high in all sectors," he said, calling for an early switch over to value-added tax.

Survival of the units depended on an early implementation of the VAT, Mr. Balakrishnan said. The sector also expected relief from financial institutions.

Separate export policy

A. Sakthivel, southern region chairman, Federation of Indian Export Organisations, called for a separate export policy for the State on the lines of the national foreign trade policy.

It would help to identify thrust sectors, tap the State's vast potential and provide necessary inputs and policy measures to enhance exports.
