Infant `declared stillborn' dies

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: An infant, who was born premature and declared stillborn by doctors at Safdarjung Hospital here this past week, died early Saturday morning. Born after only seven months of pregnancy and weighing 500 gm, the baby was diagnosed with jaundice and was under treatment.

The nine-day-old baby boy, born to Bharti Babbar on May 5, however, died at the hospital this morning. The baby's mother was admitted to Safdarjung Hospital last month and doctors attending on her claimed that she had a normal delivery. However, they later said that the baby was "stillborn'' and asked Bharti's husband Rakesh, an autorickshaw driver, to bury the child.

While Rakesh was taking the newborn for burial to the Munirka crematorium, he sensed some movement and found that the baby was alive. He rushed back to the hospital where the baby was admitted to the nursery.

An inquiry has been ordered by the hospital administration that charged two doctors with "error in judgement''. A junior doctor has been ordered to undergo a 15-day-course in baby handling.
