RI for robbers

New Delhi: A man caught on close circuit TV carrying out an armed robbery at an apartment here was, on Saturday, sentenced to seven years' rigorous imprisonment by a sessions court. After a six-year trial, Additional Sessions Judge R K Gupta convicted Sanjay. His accomplice Haneef was handed down a five-year rigorous sentence.

The video clip, produced as evidence in court, had shown the convicts entering the apartment after breaking the front door lock on the night of August 29, six years ago.

They had then roused the sleeping occupants, threatened them with a pistol and gagged them. They opened a safe in one of the rooms and attempted to escape with Rs 20,000.

However, their plans failed as, unknown to the convicts, their enterprise was being monitored on camera by the apartment security guard, who in turn set a trap and caught the fleeing duo.

Three held for murder

NEW DELHI: Three persons have been arrested for allegedly killing a person whose body was found near a temple at Seelampur in North-East Delhi on February 15.

According to the police, the accused, identified as Mohammad Masrul, Arshad and Shamsher were arrested on Friday. During interrogation, they allegedly confessed to having killed Babloo, a resident of Kasganj in Bihar.

The police said Babloo had fled his hometown in Bihar and come to Delhi along with the second wife of one Athar. Athar had two wives and had 17 children from the two marriages. He was angry with his second wife, Budhni, as she had adopted a child of another religion.

However, in January last one of Budhni's children went back to his native place and told his father that the former had an affair with Babloo. Athar then contacted his cousins, Masrul and Arshad, and asked them to get rid of Babloo.

A `costly' job

NEW DELHI: One person has been arrested for allegedly accepting bribe from a person on behalf of a Delhi police constable.

According to the police, the complainant, Lallan Saroj, had informed the police that Constable Sudheer of Model Town police station in North-West Delhi had detained his relative Dina Nath and was demanding Rs. 20,000 for releasing him. When the complainant expressed his inability to pay the amount, Sudheer agreed to pocket Rs. 5,000 as first instalment.

On Friday, as per plan, Sudheer reached near Hans Cinema hall in Model Town around 1-30 p.m. to accept the money. He arrived there on motorcycle and sent another person, Harpal Kapoor, to collect the money. The waiting police team then nabbed Harpal. Sudheer fled from the spot leaving his motorcycle behind.

Cop injured

NEW DELHI: A Delhi police head constable sustained injuries while trying to nab an alleged robber at Sarai Kale Khan in South Delhi in the early hours of Saturday.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of the Special Staff of the South Delhi police reached a park near Sarai Kale Khan around 2 a.m. Sensing the police movement, the four suspects began to flee. Head Constables Manoj, Mukesh and Mahesh began chasing them.

Manoj managed to lay his hands on one of the suspects. However, he whipped out a knife and inflicted a deep stab injury on Manoj's forearm. Mukesh and Mahesh then managed to catch hold of the suspect who too sustained minor injuries in the scuffle. Both of them were taken to All India Institute of Medical Sciences. Meanwhile, the other three managed to escape.
