`Open category' students also to get free textbooks

Special Correspondent

They will be made available to students by June 12 when schools reopen

  • Decision taken to ensure that these students don't feel discriminated
  • This would place an additional burden of Rs. 10 crores on exchequer
  • An estimated 8.4 crore textbooks likely to be required for all students

HYDERABAD: Textbooks of all classes up to SSC will also be supplied free of cost to "open category" students in all the Government, aided and local body schools from the next academic year.

A decision to extend the free benefit to this segment of students was taken at a meeting on textbook availability here on Saturday, on the ground that these students otherwise may feel discriminated. The meeting was chaired by School Education Minister N. Rajyalakshmi and attended by officials.
