Pens an open letter to citizens of the State

HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy has vowed to begin his third year in office on Sunday by gradually ridding the State of farmers suicides.

In an open letter to the citizens to mark the occasion, Dr. Reddy noted with satisfaction the decline in suicides by farmers during the last two years.

They were almost brought down to zero-level in the past three months, the Chief Minister said.

Describing himself as pro-farmer, he said that this was precisely the reason why he accorded top priority to irrigation. He justified his decision in doing so because 70 per cent of the population was dependent on agriculture.

The primary duty of the Government was to address the problems of the citizens, the Chief Minister said.

The Chief Minister considered himself head of the family.

`Family', for him, he said, meant population of the State and said that he believes in the welfare of each member of the family.

The much-needed happiness in a family would be missing if there were disparities in the growth of its members, the Chief Minister said.

He patted himself on the back - recalling an acknowledgement of received from Telugu Desam MLA Ch. Rajeswara Rao, a few days ago.

Dr. Reddy assured people that he would rectify his mistakes if they cared to point them out to him in letters addressed personally.

Dr. Reddy said that he considered them to be the eyes of the Government and sought their continued support and blessings.
