THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The People's Doctors Forum has demanded that the State Government frame a legislation to implement 27 per cent reservation for the backward classes in the higher education sector. Forum State convenor R. Jayaprakash said in a statement here on Saturday that the delay in reserving seats for the backward classes was unjustified. The protests organised by a section of students at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi against the decision to grant reservation also could not be justified. The Indian Medical Association's (IMA) stance on the issue lacks justification, Dr. Jayaprakash said. The number of students from backward classes who could aspire to pursue higher education was low. Since most of them were forced to share the family burden they were unable to appear for competitive examinations and pursue higher studies. The IMA says that reservation of some seats for the poor among the backward classes would lead to erosion of standard in the higher education sector. The Left parties, which lend their support to the United Progressive Alliance Government, should intervene in the issue, Dr. Jayaprakash said.
