Hypertension high among urban population

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: Hypertension has increased approximately 35 per cent among the urban population largely due to change in life style, stress and food habits, says the Indian Medical Association (IMA).

Hypertension is a silent killer and early detection and control can prevent complications of the heart, kidney, eye, retina, etc, said Dr. Augustine T. Mampilly, secretary, IMA Kochi branch, in a statement here.

The statement came in connection with the World Hypertension Day observance on Friday that was inaugurated in the city by Dr. V. Benny Thomas, president, IMA Kochi branch.

A symposium on hypertension was held in connection with the Day's observance. It was moderated by Dr. Georgy K. Ninan, senior consultant nephrologist, Lakeshore Hospital and PVS Memorial Hospital. Dr. Jilse George, physician, Cooperative Medical College; Dr. Harishkumar, endocrinologist, AIMS; and Dr. Anadkumar, cardiologist, Lakeshore Hospital, spoke at the symposium on various aspects of hypertension.

A book on kidney and hypertension was presented to the IMA's reference library. Dr. M. Venugopal, Scientific Committee chairman, made the concluding remarks. Dr. N. Dinesh, joint-secretary of the Association, proposed the vote of thanks.
