KOCHI: Increasing incidents of violence on the campus seem to have affected the smooth functioning of Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat). Fresh problems have erupted after a victory procession taken out in support of the LDF candidate in Aluva turned violent on Thursday. Six students of the university were taken into custody for their alleged involvement in the incident. The police registered a case based on a complaint filed by the university authorities alleging that the students had smashed the cars of the Controller of Examinations and the personal secretary to the Vice-Chancellor. The latest incident has shattered the peaceful atmosphere on the campus after the university remained closed for weeks following student violence. Six students were suspended for their alleged involvement in the violence reported from the campus. The deadlock was resolved after the university decided to withdraw the suspension order of six students, on condition that they would tender an apology. University authorities have now said that stringent action would be taken against those students getting involved in violence on the campus. The code of conduct prescribed for students will be enforced strictly. Disciplinary action would be taken against students found responsible for violating the code of conduct.
Allegations denied
The Students Federation of India (SFI) has denied allegations that their activists were involved in the violence that took place on the campus on Thursday. SFI leaders said that the university authorities were trying to make false allegations against students. The federation urged the authorities to drop charges against six of its activists for their alleged involvement in the incidents that occurred on the campus. Cochin University Employees Association has also come out against the action taken against the students. Leader of the association said that factions close to the UDF candidate in Aluva were responsible for the violence that took place on the campus. They also demanded that the university authorities take steps to end the "police raj" on the campus.
