Guntur
Staff Reporter
GUNTUR: Guntur railway station will soon get International Organisation for Standardisation's (ISO-9001:2000) certification for quality management of passenger services as the consultancy works relating to certification process have been awarded to an agency recently, according to Guntur Division Senior Divisional Commercial Manager T. Venkateshwarlu. Speaking to The Hindu here on Sunday, he said that Guntur station had also won the `Best maintained station award' in South Central Railway in 2004. Proposals valued at Rs. 8.6 crores were sent to the headquarters office for developing passenger amenities at six stations in the division under the Railway Minister's `Touch and Feel' project during the current financial year. "This scheme is much more than the concept of a model station and envisages providing passenger amenities of a high standard," he said. The proposed stations under this project were Guntur, Nalgonda, Nadikudi, Nandyal, Narsaraopet and Repalle. Due to the `Touch and Feel' project, there would be improvement in the circulating area of the station, better lighting, electrical signages, refurnishing of waiting halls, provision of electronic coach indicator boards, additional ticket booking counters among other things. The Railways was developing the entire premises of Guntur station to make it adaptable for mechanised cleaning. Surveillance cameras were installed at Guntur to keep a check on movement of suspicious persons and to avoid incidents like thefts, etc. The cameras were also proposed to be set up at Nalgonda and Nandyal stations. Seven new Retiring Rooms were commissioned at Guntur station recently. The theme of this year was `Serve passenger with a smile' and emphasis was given for providing better passenger amenities all across the division.
General ticket in advance
Mr. Venkateshwarlu said that a passenger could buy unreserved tickets up to three days in advance from the Unreserved Ticketing System (UTS) which was available in 12 stations in the division. This would relieve congestion at the booking counters, especially at Guntur.
