Only 40 companies of Central paramilitary forces made available

PATNA: The stage is set for a 10-phase panchayat elections in Bihar. The first round of elections to the three-tier rural self-governing bodies scheduled for Monday.

The State Election Commission deferred the elections in view of the five Assembly elections in the hope that the Centre would provide adequate forces to maintain law and order.

But that was not to be as just 40 companies of para-military forces have been provided against the demand for 650 companies and against assurance of making available 350 companies. According to official sources, at least 12 persons, including some candidates, have so far been killed and 17 injured in poll-related violence across Bihar. The unofficial death toll is more than 40.

The highlight of the elections is that 50 per cent of the posts are reserved for women.
