dated May 15, 1956: Report on States Bill

The Lok Sabha has extended the time-limit for the presentation of the report of the Joint Select Committee on the States Reorganisation Bill up to the first day of the next session. The Committee was to present its report on May 14. The Prime Minister told the House, "It is our intention to have the general elections in the early part of next year. It may vary by a month or so. The Select Committee would have to work keeping in view that the elections have to be finished within the dates." Mr. H.V. Kamath enquired if the dates fixed now would be firm and whether the Government had drawn up a schedule for the progress of the Bill. The Deputy Speaker, Sardar Hukum Singh, said the Ministry could not tell the House whether the Committee would adhere to the date. It was for the Committee Chairman to say. Mr. Nehru, intervening, said he was informed by the Chairman that this matter was considered by the Committee, which felt it should be able to finish the work by the end of June.
