On Rae Bareli

The editorial "On Rae Bareli and sycophancy" (May 13) presents the issue in the right perspective. Sonia Gandhi should have waited for Parliament to pass the removal of disqualification bill. The people of Rae Bareli did not express any doubts about Ms. Gandhi's integrity. They need not have been involved in her ego war.

The Rae Bareli by-election was indeed a mock battle. In fact, it was a mockery of democracy as there was no battle. The fact that Priyanka and Rahul were the main campaigners confirms that Rae Bareli was a family affair.

All Ms. Gandhi had to do was quit the offices of profit. Instead, parliamentary procedure was manipulated and she ended up wasting the country's resources to prove an unnecessary point. The Opposition should have exposed the farce by collectively withdrawing from the election.

One wonders what purpose the re-election served. Is the verdict a mandate for Ms. Gandhi to hold an office of profit, the issue over which she resigned? If not, what prevented her from giving up the other offices and retaining her MP seat? Why the resignation and re-election drama?

All the major political parties have some drawback or the other. While the BJP exploits religious sentiments with the Hindutva weapon, the Congressmen stand united only under the leadership of the family — in the absence of the family, they resort to bickering. The Left, on its part, strives hard to prevent India from shaking hands with the outside world even if it is at the cost of development. The truth behind the ideologies of different parties is achievement and consolidation of power at any cost.

S. Ananthi,
Hyderabad
