CHENNAI: Students of the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT, Madras), on Thursday donated Rs. 3.59 lakh, proceeds from Choreonite a dance contest as part of Saarang 2006 to three social welfare organisations. The beneficiaries were identified by Atma Charity Wing of the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. Prof. V.G. Idichandy, who addressed a function to present the cheques, said the gesture showed the positive side and the care that students of the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, had for social issues. The process started in 2005 when the Saarang Steering Committee decided to contribute part of the proceeds to serve the people. M.S. Ananth, Director, IIT, Madras, said it was necessary for the institution to know what was going on in the outside world and contribute to social, ecological, economic and environmental causes.
