Bangalore: "Lalgudi G. Jayaraman is the Pole Star for musicians in the country," Maharashtra Governor S.M. Krishna said here on Sunday. He was speaking after felicitating the violinist here on Sunday. He also gave away the Sri S.V. Narayanaswamy Rao Memorial National Award -2006 to Mr. Jayaraman at a function organised by the Sri Ramaseva Mandali Trust. The award carries a purse of Rs. 50,000, a memento and a certificate. Mr. Krishna said that Mr. Jayaraman stood apart in the world of music with his unique style and soulful compositions. Responding to the felicitation, Mr. Jayaraman said that he was first invited by the founder of Sri Ramaseva Mandali Trust S.V. Narayanaswamy Rao in 1947. "My first performance at the Ramanavami Music Festival organised by the Sri Ramaseva Mandali was on April 10, 1947. I have accompanied several artistes and performed on the platform provided by the mandali since then," he said. Speaking to The Hindu , he said that Narayanaswamy Rao would come to Madras every year and book artistes for the Ramanavami festival. "He was my best friend. He would not take a `no' for an answer and would not rest until he got all the artistes he wanted to perform at the Ramanavami festival," he added.
