Girl commits suicide

MYSORE: A 15-year-old girl reportedly committed suicide by setting herself ablaze at Medar Block in Mysore on Saturday. Police said the girl hailing from Kollegal was admitted to K R Hospital with burns. She died later. The Mandi Mohalla police have registered a case and investigation is under way. — Staff Correspondent

Computer course

MYSORE: University Computer Centre in association with ECIT, an ISO 9001 certified training division of ECIL, Hyderabad, is offering a short-term course in computers for aspiring engineering students, general public and housewives. According to a press statement from the systems manager of the centre, the courses include web designing (eight weeks), desk top publishing (eight weeks), C programming (four weeks), C ++ (eight weeks) and E Craft comprising computer fundamentals, MS Office and internet. MYSORE: Mysore University Private College Teachers' Association has condemned the State Government's move to disburse salaries of degree teachers deputed to pre-university colleges from the Pre-University Board. In a press statement, the association president K.P. Vasudevan said the Federation of University College Teachers Association of Karnataka (FUCTAK) has arranged a State-level teachers' convention at Central College in Bangalore on Tuesday, where the issue will be discussed. — Staff Correspondent

Protest against MUDA

MYSORE: Representatives of Association of Concerned and Informed Citizens of Mysore, Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha and the general public on Sunday condemned the failure of the Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) to distribute sites, and resolved to stage a protest against alleged irregularities in the authority. A CBI probe was sought into the affairs of MUDA. At a meeting held here, the representatives decided to stage a dharna on May 19 in front of MUDA. — Staff Correspondent

Paddy to be procured at Rs. 600 a quintal

BANGALORE: Over 1.2 lakh quintals of paddy is likely to be purchased by the Government at Rs. 600 a quintal from farmers of Manvi and Sindhanur taluks in Raichur district.

Announcing this at a press conference here on Sunday, Food and Civil Supplies Minister Govind M. Karjol said that the food and civil supplies corporation had been made the nodal agency for the purchase, and strict orders had been issued that district officials must not entertain any middlemen or agents in the purchase. The farmers were required to bring the paddy to the purchase counters and centres specified by the Government. — Staff Reporter

Three die in accident

Belgaum: Three persons, including a two-year-old child were killed on the spot when a truck hit an autorickshaw by which they were travelling in Shastrinagar here on Sunday.

According to police, the victims have been identified as Kallappa Parshuram Kalkundri (30), Dinesh (28) and Ankita Dinesh (2). They deceased were on their way to attend a `jatra' at Balekundri when the accident occurred. The autorickshaw driver who was injured has been hospitalised. Staff Correspondent

Poll date rescheduled

GULBARGA: The State Election Commission has rescheduled the dates for elections from the graduates' constituencies to the Legislative Council due next month. As as per the new schedule, the elections will be held on June 17 instead of June 8.

Official sources said here that as per the earlier announcement of the commission, the notification for the elections were supposed to be issued on May 17 and now it would be issued on May 24. The last date for filing of nominations is May 31. The scrutiny of the nominations will be taken up on June 1 and the last date for withdrawal of nominations is June 3. — Special Correspondent

Protest by journalists

HASSAN: The Hassan district unit of the Karnataka Union of Working Journalists' (KUWJ) here on Sunday protested against the attack on a photo-journalist by the police on Saturday. They wore black bands during the visit of Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy. President of the district unit of KUWJ Shivananda Tagadur said that when Prasad, the photo-journalist, tried to take a picture of the pandal that collapsed because of heavy rain, he was stopped by the police and his camera was snatched. The pandal was erected in connection with the 99th birthday celebrations of Shivakumara Swamiji of Siddaganga Math. — Staff Correspondent

BESCOM lineman electrocuted

TUMKUR: A lineman of Bangalore Electricity Supply Company was electrocuted at Irakasandra, near here, on Sunday. Siddalingappa (56) was attending to repairs atop a transformer installation at the village when he came in contact with the live wire, it is said. The company engineers, Chandrashekar and Nataraj, visited the spot. Police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Youth found hanging from tree

TUMKUR: The body of a youth was found hanging from a tree in the Honnavalli Forest area in Tumkur district on Sunday. Police identified the deceased as Manjunath (21), a resident of Madenahalli in the district. Police said he was last seen in the village on Friday. A case has been registered. — Staff Correspondent

117 graduate at XIME convocation BANGALORE: As many as 117 students, including 49 girls, of 10th batch of Post Graduate Diploma in Business Administration (PGDBM) graduated at annual convocation of Xavier Institute of Management and Entrepreneurship (XIME) on Saturday. Governor T.N. Chaturvedi was the chief guest. Nikhil Dwarkanath got the Chairman's award of Gold Medal for the student scoring highest marks and the V-Guard Company award of Rs. 5,000 for best performance in Marketing area. — Staff Reporter

Yediyurappa to tour Hassan, Shimoga

BANGALORE: Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa will be visiting Hassan, Shimoga and Chitradurga districts from May 15 to 17. Summer camp for diabetic children

Belgaum: The Diabetes Centre of KLE Hospital here conducted a summer camp for diabetic children to commemorate Mother's Day on Saturday. About 35 insulin-dependent diabetic children aged between 4 and 16 years attended the camp. Free blood sugar check-up, diet counselling, yoga therapy, quiz and drawing competition were organised on the day.
