NEW DELHI: Led by Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party chief Harsh Vardhan, a large number of party workers staged a demonstration at Jehangirpuri in North Delhi on Sunday, protesting against the ongoing water and power crisis in the Capital. The protesters broke empty pitchers and tube-lights.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Vardhan said that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh should issue orders to Union Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde to supply additional power to the Capital.

"In order to solve the power problem permanently, the Prime Minister should also arrange for fuel for the gas-based plants," he added.

"Delhi is facing power shortage of 500 MW every day this summer. The Chief Minister had earlier announced that a summer action plan had been prepared. Where is that plan? If such a plan was ready, then why are the citizens being subject to 12 hours of power cuts and water shortages? Even the Supreme Court has issued notices to the Central and Delhi Governments asking them the steps being taken to improve the situation in Delhi. Both the Governments have no answers," he said.

Dr. Vardhan said if the Prime Minister wanted, he could solve both problems within 24 hours. "The Power Minister can make additional power available to the Northern Grid and the Uttaranchal Government can supply additional water to Delhi. By reconstructing power generation plants of the Capital, additional power can be generated. But both the Central and Delhi Governments are indifferent towards the interests of the people and have no concrete plan for improving the situation."
