Pondicherry: The All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, heading the Democratic People's Front, fielded candidates in 16 constituencies in the recent Assembly polls in the Union Territory. It has won three seats (two in Pondicherry and one in Karaikal). Its allies the Puduchery Munnetra Congress (PMC), the Janata Dal (Secular), the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) and the Dalit Panthers of India have contested in the remaining 14 seats. Although the number of seats it has bagged is just three, the AIADMK is pleased with its performance. Om Sakthi Segar, an ex-serviceman and AIADMK nominee from Nellithope, has defeated the Pondicherry Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam convener and Leader of the Opposition in the outgoing Assembly, R.V. Janakiraman. The former Chief Minister was seeking to retain the seat for the sixth time in succession. The Secretary of Pondicherry State Committee of the AIADMK, A. Anbalagan, has retained the Uppalam constituency by defeating his immediate DMK rival U.C. Arumugham. V. Omalingam (AIADMK) was returned from Cottuchery in Karaikal. He has defeated his immediate Congress rival P.R.N. Thirumurugan.
PMC gets 3 seats
The PMC has won in three segments only. Its nominee and former Education Minister K. Lakshminarayanan has retained the Cassicade constituency by defeating G. Ravichandran of the Congress. The PMC's other two successful candidates are N. Anand and V.K. Ganapathy, who wrested the Bussy and Karaikal (South) constituencies from the DMK and the Congress respectively. Mr. Ganapathy has defeated the Deputy Speaker of the outgoing Assembly, A.V. Subramanian. The DMK nominee, M.A.S. Subramanian, has defeated PMC founder P. Kannan in Modeliarpeth. Dr. Subramanian has retained the seat for second time in a row.The Opposition block has seven members (three each from the AIADMK and the PMC and one from the MDMK).
