Review meeting

KURNOOL: DIG of Police K.R. Kishore Kumar asked the police make to make a clear distinction between commoners and offenders. Addressing a review meeting of police officers at District Police Office here on Saturday, he said policemen should send a message across that they were tough with the accused and polite to the people. He asked policemen to be cautious and prompt in dealing with offences against SCs and STs. SP B. Quota opposed

ANANTAPUR: State president of the OC Welfare Association G. Karunakar Reddy on Saturday urged the Government to withdraw the proposal to introduce a bill in Parliament for providing reservation to backward classes in premier educational institutions like IITs and IIMs. A nationwide movement would be launched if the Government went ahead with its proposal, he said. - Staff Reporter

Two drowned

ANANTAPUR: Two persons were drowned accidentally in an open well at Morampalli of Chilamattur mandal in the district on Saturday. According to the police, Adilaxmamma (35), who was grazing cattle, slipped into the well when she went there to drink water. One Rangappa (40) was working nearby in the field rushed to her rescue but was drowned in the process too. - Staff Reporter

DRC meeting on May 19

KADAPA: Kadapa District Review Committee meeting will be held at Collectorate Sabha Bhavan on May 19, Collector G. Asok Kumar said. Minister for Information & Public Relations Mohd. Ali Shabbeer, who is in-charge Minister of the district, will preside over the meeting that would review progress in the last two years. - Staff Reporter

Sub-inspectors posted

ADILABAD : Three Sub-Inspectors of Police, including a woman, have been given postings on Sunday. This is in addition to six Assistant Sis, who have been given fresh postings after being promoted to the post of SI.

According to a press release, Srilatha has been posted as SI of the women police station, Adilabad, A. Ramesh for Bhainsa town from Neredigonda police station and A. Narender for the Kotapally police station. - Staff Reporter

Man ends life

ADILABAD : Sandela Dattatri, 25, an agriculturist from Gimma in Jainad mandal, allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison. He was slated to marry a girl from Balapur village in the same mandal at 9 a.m. on Sunday. - Staff Reporter

Two die of sunstroke

KHAMMAM: Two persons died of sunstroke in Khammam district on Sunday. According to reports, Mukkamala Santaiah, 30, a farmer collapsed while resting under a tree in Uppalamadaka village in Wyra mandal around noon. He was shifted to a hospital, but in vain. An unidentified person aged around 50 died in Gollagudem village. Five persons affected by diarrhoea were treated in the primary health centre at Nelakondapalli village. Staff Reporter

Manmohan's public meet in Vizag likely

VISAKHAPATNAM : Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is likely to address a public meeting in the city during his visit on May 20 for laying the foundation stone for the expansion project of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant.

Arrangements are being made for it and the Indira Priyadarshini Municipal Corporation Stadium in old city will be the venue for the proposed public meeting.

Efforts are on to include a loan mela to disburse about Rs.100-crore loans to weaker sections and women's groups on the occasion. - Special Correspondent

Mahanadu panels constituted

Rajahmundry : Telugu Desam Party has announced different committees on Sunday to conduct three-day Mahanadu from May 27.

TDP core committee leaders and party functionaries -- Jyothula Nehru, Metla Satyanarayana, Ganni Krishna and Boddu Bhaskar Rama Rao -- announced the committees at a press conference. Mr. Nehru said that 18 committees would function under a senior leader in accordance with party State unit directions.

Reception committee, headed by Polit Bureau member Yenamala Rama Krishnudu, was constituted with 14 senior leaders. Kadiam Srihari was its coordinator. - Staff Reporter

YSR congratulates Gogoi on oath-taking

HYDERABAD : Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy has congratulated Tarun Gogoi on taking oath as Chief Minister of Assam at Guwahati for the second successive term. Chief Minister urged to keep poll promise

HYDERABAD : The Andhra Pradesh Unemployed Struggle Committee has reminded Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy about his pre-election promise to fill 2.5 lakh posts in various Government departments after assuming office. In a statement on Sunday, R. Krishnaiah, president of the committee, also brought to Dr. Reddy's notice his other assurances. -Special Correspondent

Move on BC list opposed

HYDERABAD : The Joint Forum of 93 Backward Classes Communities has opposed the proposal to include in the BC list `Kuntimallareddy' and `Jaiswal' castes as it would do injustice to the `weak' communities.

K. Jnaneshwar Mudiraj, president, said in a statement here on Sunday that the proposal was among those to be taken up at the review being undertaken by the Andhra Pradesh Commission for Backward Classes on May 15. - Special Correspondent

Village servants on warpath

HYDERABAD : The Andhra Pradesh Village Servants' Association has chalked out an agitational programme to achieve its demands. The agitation is being launched on May 16 with presentation of memoranda to Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy through MROs.

S. Lakshminarayana, general secretary, and M. Bapuji, and N. Satyanarayana, secretaries, said in a statement on Sunday that the association would organise dharnas at revenue divisional offices on May 23 and rallies and dharnas at collectorates on June 5. Their demands include recognition to village servants as class four staff with minimum wages of Rs.2,600. - Special Correspondent

Two beaten to death ADILABAD: Villagers of Basar beat two persons to death on Sunday when they were found extracting copper wire from apparently stolen insulated wire bundles.

According to the police, three persons - N. Arsimlu from Kamareddy in Nizamabad, Venkat Reddy from Toopran in Medak and Enugula Mallesham from Mustabad in Karimnagar had allegedly stolen the bundles some time during the night. The villagers caught hold of them and beat them up severely. Two of them died. - Staff Reporter
