What is there to celebrate, says Naidu

Special Correspondent

  • Power sector on the verge of collapse
  • Quota for Muslims becomes a ` farce'
  • Party will resist Congress `move' to revamp MPTCs

HYDERABAD: Telugu Desam president N. Chandrababu Naidu has charged the Government with failing on all fronts and questioned the rationale behind the two-year celebrations when people were in distress.

Talking to reporters on Sunday after attending the first anniversary of NTR Model School at Himayatnagar on city outskirts, he alleged that the Congress regime had ruined the State. The power sector was on the verge of collapse. The situation was akin to what prevailed nine years ago but the then TDP regime had successfully streamlined the supply and ensured quality power to consumers.

    `Raw deal' to ryots

Mr. Naidu contended that farmers were not getting remunerative prices for their produce. Prices of essential commodities had skyrocketed and corruption was rampant in all irrigation projects. The Government had invited ridicule when it filed and withdrew cases against TDP legislators for questioning irregularities in the Yellampalli project.

He said all kinds of promises were being made and foundation stones laid with a view to "misleading people." The provision of 5 per cent reservations for Muslims had become a "farce." " For what are they (Congress) celebrating when people are suffering?" he asked. He accused the Congress of trying to derive political advantage in the panchayat elections by revamping MPTCs and declared that the TDP would `expose' the move.

Speaking at the school function, he condemned political killings and said 86 TDP activists were done to death by their Congress rivals. The school was started last year to educate children of party workers who were killed by political rivals or extremists. While 130 children were admitted last year, 120 would now get admission.

    `Emulate NTR'

He asked students to emulate the ideals of TDP founder and former Chief Minister N. T. Rama Rao, set goals and achieve.

Widow of T. Prabhakar, who was killed allegedly by Congressmen in Anantapur district, said three of her children were studying in the school and expressed her gratitude.

Harish Reddy, an eighth class student, stressed the importance of providing education to poor students. He announced that pupils would skip dinner every Monday and donate the amount thus saved to an orphanage.
