Youth killed in road accident

Pathanamthitta: A 20-year-old youth was killed when the motorbike he was riding collided with a van at Thekkemala, near Kozhencherry, on Sunday. The police identified the deceased as S. Azad of Pettah, Pathanamthitta. — UNI

Motorcyclist killed

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Buhari, 26, a resident of Attingal, was killed after the two-wheeler he was riding collided with another motorcycle on the Kazhakkuttom national highway on Sunday afternoon. Buhari, who was thrown off from his vehicle in the impact, fell under the wheels of a speeding four-wheeler. He died at Medical College Hospital here. — Staff Reporter

Free anti-venom

Thrissur: Anti-venom will be given free to patients at the Jubilee Medical College Hospital here from June 1 to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of the priesthood of Thrissur Archbishop Mar Jacob Thoomkuzhy. - Staff Reporter

Photography award

MALAPPURAM: Najeeb Shah, photographer of Varthamanam daily in Malappuram, has won the Minerva Krishnankutty State Photography Award, instituted by the Press Club, Thiruvananthapuram. `Heartbreaking picture' was the theme of the photo competition. Mr. Shah won the award for his photo, captioned `The death of a goat,' which appeared in the daily on July 22, 2005. — Staff Reporter

Body identified

ALAPPUZHA: The Alappuzha South Police have identified the body of a youth, which was found in Raja Kesava Das Swimming pool here on Saturday as that of Vaisakh, 14, Vilanjoor Devaswomparambu House, A.N. Puram, Alappuzha. The police said preliminary investigations showed that the boy had accidentally drowned. The body was released to the relatives on Sunday noon after a post-mortem. - Staff Reporter

Award for The Hindu journalists

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: S. Anil Radhakrishnan and K.S. Sudhi, senior staff reporter and staff reporter respectively of The Hindu , have won journalism awards instituted by the Thiruvananthapuram Press Club. In a press release on Sunday, the Thiruvananthapuram Press Club said Mr. Anil Radhakrishnan had been adjudged the winner of the K. Madhavankutty Journalism Award for the year 2004 for his story `Revenue records disprove hotel's claim' published in The Hindu on July 3, 2004. Mr. Sudhi's story `Prayers by survivors, sobs from the orphaned,' published in The Hindu on December 26, 2005, has won for him the V. Krishnamoorthy Journalism Award for the year 2005.

The K. C. Sebastian Award for Political Reporting for the year 2005 is for S. Sudheeshan of the `Varthamanan' daily. He won the award for a series of reports titled `Aroopiyakunna Azhimathi Kathakal' published in the newspaper from August 7 to 14, 2005. — Special Correspondent

Sabarimala temple opened

Pathanamthitta: The Lord Ayyappa temple at Sabarimala was opened for pujas in the Malayalam month of Edavam on Sunday. Melsanthi M. Sukumaran Nampoodiri opened the sanctum sanctorum and lit the ceremonial lamps in the presence of Tantri Kantaru Mohanaru. Hundreds of devotees were present to have `darshan.' The Tantri performed `Sahasra Kalasa Pooja' at the Sannidhanam late in the evening. He placed the 1,001 `kalasams' on Tantri designs drawn at the eastern mandapam in the glow of traditional lamps and offered special puja before filling them with sacred water. Regular pujas will begin from tomorrow morning with `Ganapathi Homam.' The `Sahasrakalasabhishekam' will be held at noon tomorrow. — UNI

State IMA stand on quota after panel meet

KOCHI: The State leaders of Indian Medical Association have not taken a decision on the issue of reservation in professional colleges.

The issue has rocked Delhi with medical students striking against the Union Human Resource Development Minister's proposals and the IMA leaders supporting the students with a call for strike.

The new president of IMA, Kerala, C.K. Chandrasekharan Nair, told The Hindu from Palakkad on telephone, "we have not taken any decision. The Central Working Committee of the IMA will meet in Mount Abu on May 21 and 22, where our stand will be announced." — Staff Reporter
